Incubators are sold on egg capacity and a picture of a chick. The specifications that actually decide a hatch are turning, humidity control and published power draw — and only one maker here publishes all three.
For a first hatch that is meant to produce an actual flock, the Brinsea Maxi 24 Advance is the strongest published case: 24 standard hen eggs, programmable automatic turning that stops itself two days before hatch, and a published 24 watts typical — the only maker here that publishes a typical power figure at all. If the point is watching rather than volume, the Harris Farms Nurture Right 360 turns every two hours and stops three days out for considerably less money, at the cost of a manufacturer who publishes no specification table.
Every incubator in this category is sold on two numbers: how many eggs it holds and how much it costs. Neither one predicts whether you get chicks. What predicts chicks is whether the eggs are turned often enough, whether humidity is held in the published band, and whether the machine tells you when something has gone wrong at two in the morning on day nine.
So this page ranks on what the makers actually commit to in writing. That turns out to be a sharply discriminating test. Brinsea publishes capacity by species, typical and maximum wattage, dimensions, weight, turning behavior and a three-year warranty on every model. That difference is not a detail — it is the difference between being able to compute what a hatch costs and having to guess.
What actually separates one incubator from another
Six things, in the order they matter for a first hatch. None of them is price and none of them is the picture on the box.
Turning, and whether it stops.Mississippi State University Extension publishes at least 4 to 6 turns daily through day 18, and then “do not turn eggs during the last 3 days before hatching.” A machine that turns automatically but keeps turning into lockdown is worse than a manual one, because it will kill chicks that have already positioned to pip. Every automatic machine here publishes an auto-stop; the timing differs.
Humidity control. Manual on five of the six: you top up a water tray and read a hygrometer against the published 58 to 60 percent band. One machine publishes automatic humidity, and it is the most expensive.
Published power draw. Not for the electricity bill, which is trivial, but because a maker that publishes typical AND maximum watts is a maker that has measured its own product. Brinsea does on every model. Nobody else publishes a typical figure, which means for those machines you can only compute a ceiling.
Alarms. An incubator runs unattended for 504 consecutive hours. The question is not whether it will drift but whether it will tell you. Brinsea publishes high and low temperature alarms, and on the Mini II Advance a room temperature alarm as well. The Farm Innovators machine publishes a notification light that triggers below 97 F or above 103 F, which is a six-degree dead band.
Capacity honesty. Every stated capacity here is a tray count for standard hen eggs. Large hen, duck and goose eggs drop it, sometimes by half, and the good makers publish the second number too.
Warranty, read against duty cycle. This is a machine that runs continuously for three weeks at a time and then sits in a cupboard for eleven months. Brinsea publishes three years across the range. The Nurture Right 360 is listed at one.

That is not an omission on our part: Manna Pro and Farm Innovators publish a single wattage rating with no typical figure, so the only honest thing to write there is nothing. It is also why the running-cost page can compute a real figure for the Brinsea machines and only a ceiling for the other two.
The turning column is the one most likely to mislead, because all four automatic machines clear the published minimum and they do it in noticeably different ways. The automatic-turner comparison takes that column apart properly — the intervals, when each machine stops, and why the stop matters more than the interval.
Brinsea Maxi 24 Advance — the one that produces a flock
Twenty-four standard hen eggs is the first capacity here that survives the arithmetic of a real hatch. Fertility is never total, not every fertile egg develops, and roughly half of what does hatch is male. Twenty-four set is how you end up with a handful of pullets; seven set is how you end up with a story. Brinsea publishes 24 watts typical and 40 maximum for it, which works out at roughly a penny per egg-slot for the whole 21 days.
The turning is programmable in both interval and angle and stops automatically two days before hatch, so the single most commonly forgotten step happens whether you remember it or not. Temperature is digital, factory-preset to 99.5 F, adjustable, with high and low alarms.

Seven eggs, twelve watts typical, and the most complete alarm set here: high temperature, low temperature, and a room temperature alarm that warns you the garage is getting cold rather than waiting for the incubator to lose the fight. Turning is programmable and stops two days out. There is a published countdown to hatch day, so day 18 is not a date you have to keep in your own head.
The honest downside: seven standard hen eggs is three fewer than the cheaper manual model in the same shell, because the turning cradle takes the room. Seven eggs set is realistically two or three chicks, and of those, one or two hens. As a way to learn incubation properly it is excellent; as a way to get a flock it is not a serious proposition, and it is the most expensive machine per egg on this page by a wide margin.

The honest downside: polystyrene foam. It is why the machine is cheap and why it insulates well, and it is also porous — it absorbs moisture, it cannot be properly disinfected between hatches, and it does not survive many seasons. The turning interval of every four hours is the longest here. And the high/low notification light only triggers below 97 F or above 103 F, which is a very late warning for an egg that is being chilled or cooked.
Brinsea Mini II Eco — the honest manual option
Ten standard hen eggs, twelve watts, a liquid-in-glass thermometer and a three-year warranty. There is no motor and no turning cradle, which means there is one fewer thing that can fail mid-incubation, and it is the cheapest route into a machine from a maker that publishes everything.
The honest downside: you turn the eggs. At the published 4 to 6 turns daily through day 18, that is somewhere around ninety separate interventions, on workdays, at roughly even spacing. Most people who buy a manual incubator for a first hatch underestimate this, and a missed day is not recoverable. There is also no digital readout and no alarm of any kind, so a fault overnight is a fault you discover in the morning.
What we would actually buy
If you want chicks: the Maxi 24 Advance, and set fewer eggs than it holds if your ordinance is tight.
