What this site is

Peep & Pen is a buying guide for people getting their first flock. It is organized by the stages of a first year — planning, the brooder, the coop, feeding, laying, health — because that is the order the decisions actually arrive in. Every other site in this category organizes by topic, which is a good shape for a library and a poor one for somebody with six chicks arriving on a Tuesday.

There are currently 44 guides and comparisons across those six stages, covering 41 products.

Who writes it

Scooter M. writes Peep & Pen. An enthusiast who is genuinely into this: I read the manuals, compile the published specifications, and do the math. No lab coat.

That framing is deliberate and it is worth being explicit about, because this category is full of bylines that imply more. I do not own most of this gear. I have not run a multi-month test of automatic coop doors, I have not brooded chicks under every plate on the market, and I am not a veterinarian or a poultry scientist. Where a page needs experience I do not have, it says so on the page rather than in a disclaimer at the bottom.

What we do instead

Four things, and they are the whole method:

• Compile published specifications and cite them. Every spec on a product page carries the document it came from. Where a maker publishes nothing, the page says “not published” rather than filling the gap.
• Do the arithmetic, and show the inputs. Running cost from published wattage and the current national electricity rate. Coop capacity from published interior dimensions against the space figures extension services publish. Every calculation on this site can be redone with a calculator.
• Cite the extension services. Penn State, Maryland, Oregon State, Cornell and poultry.extension.org publish husbandry figures that are free, authoritative and almost entirely absent from commercial content in this niche.
• Say what to skip. Every product carries a “skip it if” line, and several pages argue against buying anything at all.

What this site is not

• Not a test lab. Products we claim to have tested: zero. Sites that do test exist and are genuinely valuable; we are not competing with them on that ground.
• Not veterinary advice. Anything systemic — a bird that is unwell rather than injured — is a call to a veterinarian or your state poultry extension office. The health pages say this where it matters rather than only here.
• Not a source of legal advice. The predator page cites federal law on protected birds because getting that wrong is a criminal matter, but it is a pointer to the primary sources rather than a substitute for checking your own state rules.
• Not international. This is a US site. Prices are USD, temperatures are Fahrenheit, and the products link to Amazon.com.
