Treadle feeders: the mechanism, the training, and the bantam problem

A lid that opens under a bird's weight is the only feeder design that closes overnight. It is also the only one your flock has to be taught to use.

The short answer

A treadle feeder holds the lid shut until a bird stands on a weighted plate. That is what makes it the only feeder design that is closed overnight, which is what actually removes the rodent invitation. The trade is a published two-week training period and a known problem with light breeds.

How the mechanism works

A hinged plate on the front of the feeder is linked to a counterweighted lid. A bird heavy enough to depress the plate opens the lid; when it steps off, the lid falls shut. There is no electronics, no power and nothing to fail except the pivot.

The consequence is that at night, when there are no birds standing on it, the feeder is a closed metal box. That is the whole product. Everything else — capacity, materials, finish — is secondary to the fact that at 2 a.m. the feed is not accessible.

The stainless steel fasteners on the Large model are worth noticing. Fasteners are what rust first on an outdoor mechanism, and a seized pivot is how a treadle feeder fails. Publishing the fastener material is a small detail that suggests somebody thought about the failure mode.

Training, in detail

The published procedure is two settings with one week on each, using training bolts supplied in the box. In practice this means:

  1. Week one: the lid is propped open so the birds simply eat from it and learn that this object contains food.
  2. Week two: the lid is partly closed so they have to step on the plate to widen it, connecting the action to the result.
  3. Week three onward: full operation.

Two practical notes. First, remove the old feeder gradually rather than all at once — hungry birds do not experiment, they wait. Second, watch that every bird has learned it, not just the confident ones; a bird at the bottom of the order that has not worked out the plate will lose condition quietly.

The bantam problem
